For outdoor sports, such as camping, mountain climbing, hiking, etc., if you have a long time or are ready to spend the night outside, you need to bring a tent. The function of the tent is to shelter from the cold, rain, wind, etc., so the tent must be fixed. The selection of tents is also prepared in advance.
How to fix the tent so that the wind won’t blow?
The first thing you should pay attention to is choosing a leeward place to set up your tent.
Do not choose a position facing the wind, such as the ridge or saddle of the mountain. Choosing a location surrounded by convex terrain or shaded by trees can effectively reduce the intensity of the wind.
Second, you should choose a suitable tent before departure.
If you know about the high winds you may encounter before you set out, choose a tent that is sturdy and can withstand high winds. Generally, do not choose single-layer tents or wedge-shaped tents, choose dome tents or wedge-shaped tents among double-layer tents and choose suitable alpine tents in extreme cases.
Third, when setting up camp, the smallest projected surface of the tent should face the possible wind direction.
The projection surface that reduces the wind direction can effectively improve the windproof strength of the tent. For example, when using a tunnel tent, the “tunnel” direction should be in the direction of the wind.
Fourth, pull the windbreak rope well.
General tents that can withstand strong winds will be equipped with windproof ropes, and all wind ropes should be tightened and fixed when camping. The wind rope should generally be oriented tangentially to the edge of the tent. The other end of the wind rope should be fastened to a solid object, such as a tree, a large rock, etc. At the same time, you can also press the edges and corners of the tent with large stones.
If there is nothing around to fix it, ground pegs will be used. There are various styles of ground pegs. Common ground pegs and T-shaped ground pegs are widely used in soil and debris terrain, while flat ground pegs are suitable for sand or snow. Place the ground peg towards the tent, insert it into the ground at a 45° angle to the ground, and fasten the wind rope to it. If the snow is too soft or you don’t have ground pegs, use whatever you can to make T-anchors in the snow.
What should I pay attention to when using the tent?
1.Pick a camp
When choosing to camp, you should choose a relatively flat ground, and clean up sharp objects such as gravel under the tent. Although the bottom fabric of the tent is generally thickened, it is still easy to scratch and wears. If conditions permit, you can carry a plastic sheet and spread it under the tent, which can not only protect the tent but also isolate moisture and keep it warm.
2.When setting up the tent
When setting up a tent, remember to connect the tent pole and push it into the opening of the tent, and the same is true when dismantling the tent. The first is to avoid the tent poles being separated from each other when pulling, which is difficult to pull out, and the second is to prevent the separated tent poles from scratching the tent.
3.When living in the camp
Do not enter the tent with shoes, and do not put the outer layer of the double boot into the tent when wearing alpine boots. This will prevent sand, gravel, etc. from entering the tent and scratching the base fabric.
4.When dismantling the tent
Before dismantling the tent, turn the tent over and shake it to shake out all the debris in the tent. When collecting a double-layered account, wrap the outer account in the inner account, and place the bottom cloth of the inner account on the outermost side for protection.
5.Maintenance of the tent
Each time the tent is used, it needs to be completely air-dried and then put away to prevent mildew, but generally do not expose the tent to the sun. The tent can be cleaned with water or mild detergent. Be careful not to brush the tent surface with a hard brush, and do not let the tent come into contact with chemicals such as pesticides, which will damage the breathable waterproof coating on the tent surface.
